ColoradoIndependents Website - Version 2
CI Newsletter November 11, 2000 Vol. 2
To all the early adopters of the ColoradoIndependents website, thanks for your support -
it's been fantastic. One of our visitors has even volunteered to write a press release and
mail it to the front range press. Other visitors have communicated support, links, and
other things that really help to get CI going.
Forgive the early
newsletter, but after seeing the new profiles going up on the site, we feel we need
to get on top of implementing a more focused approach to sorting out who we are as
independents.
The first thing we feel
strongly about is that if you are not liable for withholding your own taxes and paying your
own benefits, you should not list your profile on the CI website. We do have one exception
and that is a W2 employee that freelances on the side with the intention of doing it full time.
We are cool with that
because lets face it, when you are sometimes eating too many feathers, you may have to
become a W2 to survive. And also, possibly most of us broke out of the W2 thing to
become an independent by starting with side jobs while we were employed.
But if you are not
actively trying to become an independent we hope you would be sensitive to those who list
here and who are responsible for their own health, taxes, retirement, overhead, and the
rest. After all, our aim is to become a decent resource for those who pay our bills,
whether they be customers needing a website, or corporations who want an independent consultant.
For more information
about starting your own business or becoming an independent see:

The following are
the questions we are proposing to implement *soon* on the CI website. If you have
time, we would appreciate your feedback *very soon* at the following email address:
feedback@coloradoindependents.com
Here are the
proposed questions from which you will select when you post a profile:
I am the following type of independent:
A fulltime individual independent
Represent myself and other independents (fulltime)
An independent-oriented business with W2's on my staff
A W2 employee but I freelance on the side
For the next
question see:
www.irs.gov/prod/bus_info/pub1635.html
www.irs.ustreas.gov/prod/forms_pubs/pubs/p58303.htm
My tax status is:
Sole Proprieter (you use your SSN, not EIN)
Partnership (must have EIN)
Ordinary Corporation (must have EIN)
Chapter S Corporation (must have EIN)
LLC (must have EIN)
I prefer the following relationship with other companies that have projects:
Contract To Hire (you want to become a W2)
Contract Independent (you are a Sole Proprieter)
Contract Corp To Corp (you have an EIN number)
The following best describes my working habits:
I am a road warrior who is used to working anywhere, anytime
I spend a lot of time working at remote client sites but I would prefer to be home on the weekends
I don't mind travel and work on-site but I would prefer to go home once in every 24 hour period
I generally work on-site as long as it's within a 1 hour commute
I generally work on-site as long as it's within a half hour commute
I have multiple clients and projects, but I can work on-site a few days at a time
I have multiple clients and projects so it's tough to be on-site
(note on following: Categorization is tough but we have to do it so that those seeking help with projects
can have you doing the thing you love most. Let us know if there is a catagory you feel should be here.)
If I was offered a project today I would prefer it was in the following area:
1 General Programming
2 Project Management
3 Application Architecture Design
4 Web Graphics and Front End
5 Web Middle Tier Component
6 Web Back End
7 Web Development End-to-End
8 Database Design and Development
9 General Media/Design/UI
10 Sales
11 Marketing
12 Writing/Content Producer
13 Startup Expert
14 Talent Broker
15 Other Expertise
Thats what we've come up with. What can we do to tune this even more before we implement?
Regards,
Clint Lewis
