INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR GENERAL RESOURCE LINKS
|
| COLORADO RESOURCES |
Unit of 1
Colorado networking organization/site for Independent Professionals. Put together by Andrea
Michalek, it is a nicely done site that contains many good resources for the independent that are not listed here. I
especially like the way the forum integrates into the front page. |
Career Passions
This is a coaching site put together by Cheryl Poules. It's really great that there are a few folks dedicated to
this aspect of the IT job hunt. |
Computeredge
Denver-based magazine with a website that has some Colorado-based information that might be useful. |
Daily Earth
A list of most of the newspapers in Colorado. I thought we had sent out press releases to all the news orgs until I saw
this list. Now I have a bunch more work to do. This would be useful for those of you who want exposure in Colorado if your
press release can cut it. |

| GOVERNMENT CONTRACT WEBSITE RESOURCES |
Small Business Innovation Development
More tax money at work. From the site: Since its enactment in 1982, as part of the Small Business Innovation Development
Act, SBIR has helped thousands of small businesses to compete for federal research and development awards. Their
contributions have enhanced the nation's defense, protected our environment, advanced health care, and improved our ability
to manage information and manipulate data. |
Air Force Small Business Online
What I read somewhere is that the AF has $8 billion aimed at small business. Only 5 billion made made it to small
business in year 2000. $1 billion is targeted to women-owned businesses. The general idea is that the AF tries to award 23
percent of contracts to small biz but fill short at only 16 percent in 2000. Help them spend our money. |
FedBizOpps
Sort of a one stop place for finding out a lot about doing business with the feds. I wonder if the guy in the ????-mark
suit on the TV ad used this place as a resource. |
| OUT-OF-STATE RESOURCES |
Employee Handbook
If you do have an employee you use in your shop, it helps to have a solid system to deal with
policies, etc. This book was written by employment lawyers to cover all that stuff. I haven't read the book
but I agreed to link to them. If you get it, let me know what you think. |
Million Dollar Computer
Consultant
This is the website that supports Bryan Brandenburg's book Million Dollar Computer Consultant. I took a quick
glance at the site and it seems to be for real. I'm requesting a copy of the book from Bryan Brandenburg. If he sends one,
I'll let you know what I think. |
Computer Consulting 101
This is another site that sells products directed towards consultants. Joshua Feinberg runs the show there and focuses
on the marketing and sales tools we all need to enhance our business. |
Projux On Line Invoice and Project Tracking
From their website: "Projux is the simplest web-hosted application for tracking your projects and managing
invoices." It looks pretty good to me. You can sign up for monthly recurring, one month, 6 months, or 12 months -- all
at different prices. The monthly recurring for a single person shop is $15. I do find creating and tracking invoices a
hassle. The added benefit of Time and Expense tracking as well as project information sharing might make it worthwhile for
you to try this service out. |
Tech Journey
Essential resources for computer professionals. This site was referred to me and looks like it has lots of good IT
related information. There is a good looking job links section that is worth checking out. |
The Talent Economy Magazine
A good magazine for IT contract professionals. Used to be Contract Professional magazine but merged with another one and
changed the name. |
Free Agent Nation
Put together by Dan Pink, a former presidential speechwriter and contributor to Fast Company website material. Dan just
released a great book that discusses the changes in society from the organization-man job mentality to a nation of many
independent workers. I can definitely recommend the book. He's out in the trenches letting the rest of the world know about
independents. |
TechVenue
This site lists a large percentage of the IT regional technology events around the world. It covers many of our local
events and if you are a non-profit or your event is free, you can list for free. |
LibrarySpot
Library spot. This is just such a useful site that it is worth linking to. If you are an independent, you need lots of
resources to get the next job that aren't what you'd think you need. This site is a great portal to resources and
references. |
Encomia
Encomia.com provides tools to build, design, sign and archive legally-binding online contracts.
Contracts appear seamlessly integrated into your web site. Encomia.com provides the security, encryption, digital
signatures, and more. More of this should start happening especially with IT independents. |
LawDepot.com
Their main thing is offering a large repository of legal documents. They offer a
variety of legal contracts including bill of sale, residential lease, promissory note,
confidentiality agreements, employment agreements, etc. The idea is to then use your lawyer if
needed to fine tune. |
Digital Contracts, Inc.
Another site about putting together contracts. This site has a lawyer in the background and a virtual in-house legal
department for Internet, new media and software contracts. For a low fee, less than 2 hours of an attorney's time the site
claims you can create legal contracts that can be customized to fit your needs. |
Edwards Web Developer Site
For Web Developers. I stumbled across this site recently and love it. Prolific Edward is developing out of Berlin and
has put together a very useful, non-commercial site for web developers. I'd recommend subscribing to his newsletter. |
Slashdot
"News for Nerds. Stuff that matters." For IT professional developers, especially open source afficiando's.
This is the mother of all discussion sites regarding the IT world. |
The Drayton Bird Partnership
This is a "Shagadelic" marketing website out of of London. For instance - 42 lessons in direct marketing. Well
worth visiting for the independent looking to better his or her marketing approach. Yeah Baby! |
Gary
Conroy's Techwriters List
This is a list of tech writers broken down by region. It is run by Gary Conroy, who used to manage the about.com Tech
Writers section. You can put yourself on the list. If you are a technical writer this is great stuff! Check out his main
page for tech writers at www.gary-conroy.com. |
RealRates.com BBS
IT Contractor Meeting Place recommended by CI visitor Greg Nims, this is great! A place to talk about the trials and
tribulations of being a contractor, independent, whatever you want to call yourself. Probably the most active of any I've
seen. Lots of folks to give you advice. |
RealRates.com
RealRates.com Main Site - from the same guys as BBS link above. They are into it. I'm really impressed with the site's
attitude. Thanks for the tip Greg. |
Media Bistro
Nice portal with job listings for media-oriented professionals. |
Gil Gordon & Associates
Calling all teleworkers! This simple site consolidates a wide variety of information from around the world, and from
many different perspectives, the subjects of telecommuting, teleworking, the virtual office, and related topics. I want to
believe! |
Internation Telework Association & Council
More telecommute oriented stuff. A non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the economic, social and environmental
benefits of telework. Members share information about the design and implementation of telework programs, the development of
the worldwide telework sector, and research. |
Telework.org
One more telecommute site to round out our sites. Between the three listed you should be set with the information you
need. |
Professional Association of Contract Professionals
Another backoffice provider. Well designed site. |
Contract Professional Handbook
The Contract Professionals Handbook. It's a pdf handbook overviewing professional contracting. Put out by Professional
Association of Contract Professionals. |
